English as Second Language (ESOL) ,  Florida University Gate provides academic English for all ESL learners through our ESOL program. Our innovative program is intended to prepare our students for entry into various US universities for both undergraduate and graduate studies, while instilling the necessary skills for our students to score a 6.5 or higher on the IELTS exam.

Class Schedule

Students take 20 hours of instruction per week, either in morning classes or afternoon classes. Schedules will be made based on a student’s level. Both Fall and Springs semesters are 14 weeks. The summer semester is 13 weeks. Our curriculum offers six levels of English language instruction. At the end of one year in this program, students will be prepared to take the IELTS exam and receive a score of 6.5 or higher.

Our Curriculum

FUG’s curriculum is language and application based. We incorporate all the necessary language skills in our classrooms. Our textbooks come directly from Cambridge University Press, which is one of the three entities involved in the design and implementation of the IELTS exam.

IELTS-Infused Learning

Our curriculum focuses on learning English by using listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar with the IELTS skills embedded in each lesson. IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System. As many universities require international students to take this exam before they can apply to attend, we decided to choose a curriculum that will allow our students to learn the English language, while earning the necessary test-taking strategies for this exam.

Full Contact

Our approach incorporates the five English language learning skills from the earliest level to our most advanced level. Each unit and textbook builds on the skills presented in the previous units and texts.

Academic English Curriculum Descriptions:

FUG’s Curriculum is fully adopted from Cambridge University Press. The two main texts used for the ESOL program are Touchstone and Viewpoint. Touchstone and Viewpoint, together, are a complete six-level, integrated-skills series for adult learners.

Touchstone is designed for beginning to intermediate students. Viewpoint is designed for advanced English learners.Touchstone focuses on the traditional four skills as well as grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Emphasis is placed on grammar and real-world application of the language in these texts, with less focus on reading and writing. Each student’s book contains 12 units (these units must be taught in order), which focus on a broad range of content and topics that form the basis for acquiring these language skills. The units are further broken down into four lessons with several subsections. The units are grouped in threes, and there is a ‘Touchstone Checkpoint’ at the end of every third unit to assess progress.

Viewpoint carries the skills acquired from Touchstone into advanced English studies. Together, the six-level series takes students from CEFR A1 - C1.
